When should loan officers ask past clients for a testimonial?

A written testimonial is different from a Google review. Reviews help local search. Testimonials help your website, listing presentations, and referral conversations with real words from people who already trust you.

The question is not whether to ask. It is when the ask feels earned instead of awkward.

Best windows to ask

Ask when the client has clearly felt the win, not when they are still buried in paperwork:

  • 1-2 weeks after funding. Keys are in hand, stress is down, and the process is still fresh.
  • After a save. If you rescued a rate lock, fixed a condition mess, or calmed a last-minute surprise, ask while gratitude is high.
  • After a quiet check-in. A helpful follow-up months later can earn a stronger quote than a day-of ask.

How to ask without pressure

Keep the request short and optional:

  1. Thank them for trusting you with the loan.
  2. Ask for 2-3 sentences on what stood out about working with you.
  3. Offer to draft a starter quote they can edit if writing feels hard.
  4. Confirm how you may use it (site, emails, agent packets).

Do not bundle the testimonial ask with a review ask, referral pitch, or refinance talk in the same message.

What to do with the quote

Store the testimonial with permission notes in your CRM. Use the best lines on your site and in agent intros. Rotate quotes so the same family is not everywhere at once.

Then keep showing up with value. A branded monthly rate update from RateUpdate gives past clients a useful reason to stay connected between asks.

Bottom line: Ask for testimonials when the experience still feels good and the client is not being sold something else in the same breath.
